Interview with Alina Sack
What inspired you to start your company?
My first son was a challenged sleeper, waking frequently during day and night.
After failing sleep school, I designed the first ergoPouch to help him sleep with more comfort and allow natural movability without getting tangled. It worked, so I wanted to share my new found product with the world.
There are many products on the market aimed at helping babies sleep. What makes ergoPouch unique?
ergoPouch started the first ever “zip up swaddle” revolution in the world. We are constantly developing new products to meet consumer needs. Our Sleep Suit Bag is now the favorite savior for toddlers and sleep. It has a 4-way zipper – first ever, which converts a sleeping bag into a suit with legs. Our complete range is complemented with natural fibers to keep the body temperature of baby/toddler consistent throughout the sleep cycle.
Do you have any advice for parents in the trenches of sleep deprivation?
I’ve been there for sure. It’s not easy even when you get the opportunity to sleep, you wake up waiting for that wake-up call. Your heart sinks every time. I guess your body gets used to it over time with the help from coffee. It eventually passed and my memory seemed to block those tiring nights, maybe that is why I had baby number 2.
If you could hand off one chore to someone else each day, what would it be?
I actually do hand off a couple of chores to someone each day which allows me more time to focus on my children and my business! I am so grateful all the house cleaning and laundry is done for us by our lovely helper Jem who helps keep me sane.
I wish everyone could have her but I’m not sharing.
What is your favorite thing to do to relax and unwind?
Wine and a foot massage if I can get one at home! Home to me is a place where I am truly myself and don’t need to talk to anyone. I am naturally introverted and my natural state of mind is quiet.
What is your best parenting hack?
Distraction used to work perfectly for my boys when they were younger but they got wise.
Now I just send in the big guns. Dad.
What is the best white lie that you’ve told your child?
Umm, struggling to find one, I’m pretty straight up with them. They asked me about Santa and I told them the truth.
If you could describe motherhood/fatherhood in one word, what would it be?
LOVE.
What’s one moment in your motherhood journey that has made you proud?
There are many moments however one that sticks in my mind is when my boys and I ran to catch the train, they said to me “ mama be careful, don’t trip and fall.” Normally that would be me saying that to them.
What is one piece of advice BIG you want to pass along to your children?
Stay positive, out of every bad thing there is something good. The first 100 years are the hardest.
What is one piece of advice you would pass along to other mums?
Every phase passes, if they are still doing the same thing at 18 then you have a problem.
How do you tackle the work/life balance?
I love my work so it does blend into my overall life. I try to prioritize what is urgent and what is not. I focus on my family when home. Weekends are all about my kids. One date night with hubby every week and some alone time. But there is never enough time in the day to be fully satisfied with work or home. We always need more time at work and more time at home.
As they say, every working mother needs a wife.
What was the last book you read?
I read to learn, so the last book was “The 4 Disciplines of Execution” in an audio format. I listen and walk. Being time poor I figure this is the best way to learn and work off that butt in one go.
